National Philanthropy Day®

November 15th recognizes and pays tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy has made in our lives, communities, and world.

National Philanthropy Day® (NPD) in Canada is November 15th and is the special day to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy – and those people active in the philanthropic community – have made in our lives, our communities and our world.

AFP Central Ontario celebrates this annual day by recognizing the significant contributions of individuals in our own local communities, who through their own philanthropic giving and their work in our sector, help make fundraising, and fundraisers, stronger.

Annually we host an event with the following Awards being presented:

Youth in Philanthropy Award
Eric Dean Mentor Award

Nomination forms for both awards are below.

National Philanthropy Day® Fun Facts:

When NPD was first celebrated in 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation officially recognizing Nov. 15, 1986, as National Philanthropy Day®. Since then, the day has been recognized by numerous state, provincial and local governments across North America.
Canada became the first country in the world to recognize NPD in 2009. Legislation is now in Parliament to permanently celebrate Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day® every year.
Noted songwriter Marvin Hamlisch wrote the official NPD song, “Now, More Than Ever.” Sheet music is available on request by emailing

Youth in Philanthropy Award

AFP Central Ontario Chapter has established a Youth Individual or Group in Philanthropy Award to be presented in recognition of outstanding volunteerism and leadership by youth.

Individual and Group This award recognizes service by an individual ages 10–23 who demonstrate outstanding commitment to the community through direct financial support, development of charitable programs, volunteering and leadership in philanthropy. Nominees will be judged based on work done while they were 10–23 years old.

One of the Chapter’s central roles is to broaden the public’s awareness of the value of philanthropy.  Additionally, the Chapter feels a responsibility to foster coming generations of volunteers, donors, and professionals in the charitable sector. By establishing this award the chapter hopes to serve both aims while giving richly deserved recognition to the efforts of youth, who are involved in philanthropic activities.

AFP Central Ontario graciously acknowledges the amazing support of the Youth in Philanthropy Award provided by

Eric Dean Mentor of the Year Award

Eric spent his career setting a path of excellence for himself, the charitable sector, and future fundraisers. His belief in mentorship and how he invested his time and wisdom into future leaders, is the platform for this award. His unique sense of humor, his commitment to his chosen causes, and the field he worked in, all displayed his belief in the work of bringing the mission to life through philanthropic work.

Recipients of this award will continue his legacy through their passion and commitment to the future of fundraising.
